Craps – A Short History
Dice games have a long history and archaeologists have dice dating back to over 4,000 years ago, so it’s been a popular game for millennia.
It is speculated that the origins of craps comes from the Middle East and has its roots in an Arabic game called al-zahr. Traveling merchants introduced it to Europe in the middle-ages and it became known as Hazard. It remained popular in Europe and was both enjoyed by the rich and noble as well as the less well off and was a popular game in French Taverns as the ‘street’ version of craps was very easy to set up with little equipment.
There are many theories of where the name craps came from but a popular one is that it comes from ‘crapaud’ the French word for toad. As players would be crouched over when playing on the street or tavern floor, it was said they resembled toads hence the name.
Colonists from France brought the game with them to a Canadian colony named Acadia in the 1700s. The French were forced out of Acadia and it became Nova Scotia an English colony. The French colonists migrated to the American State of Louisiana where they introduced the game they called ‘crebs’ to the Americans.

In this quick guide, we will keep to the basics and we won’t confuse you by introducing all the different bets that are available to play. How to Play
You begin the game by placing a bet. We will discuss some of the betting options in a while but we will start with the mechanics of the game.
After you’ve placed your bet we have what is known as the come out roll. At land-based casinos, players take it in turns to roll the dice. The player throwing the dice is known as the shooter. When you are playing online you’ll always be the shooter and rather than rolling the dice you’ll click the roll button.
The two dice used in craps will be rolled and there are three possible results.
A Natural – If the outcome of the dice is a roll of a 7 or 11 you win and can roll the dice once more.
Craps – If luck is against you and the roll is a 2, 3, or 12 you lose.
Point – Roll a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10.
Once a point is established it a white circular button with the words On will appear above the point you rolled.
You now continue to roll the dice until one of two outcomes happens, if the dice hits the same number as your point again you win. If a 7 is rolled first then you will lose that betting round.
Craps Betting Options
If you’ve seen the layout for an online craps table you might think that it looks rather complex with all the different bets you can place on it. The truth is that you can ignore most of them especially when you are just starting out. Later on, you might want to research some of these other bets but let’s not get too ahead of ourselves.
Pass and Don’t Pass Bets
These are the most simple bets and they pay even money so if you bet $10 you will win $10. The Pass Line bet is placed before the come out roll and you place the chips where it is marked on the table. As we discussed earlier once you have played your Pass Line bet you’ll have three outcomes depending on what is rolled on the come out roll a win, loss or point established. With the Don’t pass bet you are betting on the opposite results if a 2 or 3 is thrown it will be a win, as will a 7 appearing before the point appears. If a 12 is rolled this is what is called a push and you neither win or lose. The house edge for the pass bet is 1.41% and the Don’t Pass bet is even more advantageous at 1.36%. Come and Don’t Come Bets
These bets only come into play once the point has been established, apart from that the bets are very similar to the two pass line bets. The come bet will win if a natural is rolled and lose if the craps are rolled. If a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 is rolled then the number rolled will become the come bet point. The Don’t Come bet is the opposite following the same principles as the Don’t Pass bet. These bets payout at evens and have a low house edge of 1.41% making them another great bet for beginners.
There are dozens of other bets you can place when playing online craps but for beginners it is very easy to go through your bankroll quickly if you pick the wrong wagers.
A quick tip before we finish is to avoid the Big 6 or 8 bet, it pays out even money if either 6 or 8 are rolled on the dice. If it is not rolled before the 7 on the come out roll then the bet is lost. Rather than betting on the Big 6 or 8 a place bet on 6 or 8 has much better odds at 1.52%. If anyone is crazy enough to bet on the Big 6 or 8 the house has a huge advantage of 9.09%.
